‘WHY THE HELL IS MY ENGAGEMENT SO LOW LATELY?’’
You’ve probably asked yourself this before if you’ve actively been for a while now.
I know, it’s messed up.
I bet everyone would like do know the magic formula on how to get more Instagram likes.
You know those days where you have a photo to post that you are super excited about? That amazing picture from your most recent trip and you can already see all the likes that will shower the moment you press post.
The day finally came, you finally share it with the world, and for some reason it is it is a big massive FAIL.
Yes, my friend, I know the feeling and I agree that it can be extremely demotivating.
But I truly believe this is where the difference lies on those who succeed on Instagram and those who don’t.
The ones who push it through, no matter the number of likes are the ones who will ultimately reach their goals. They are the ones that keep posting, no matter how demotivated they feel; the ones who continue to engage even when they are not posting something that day…
Basically, these are the ones who don’t give up when things get tough.
Because the good news is that it is NOT impossible to be an Influencer, anyone can become one.
However, keep in mind that it definitely is not easy to have the patience, discipline and determination (on a long-term basis of course, as there is no short-term success on the Gram – except if you are already famous, or lucky enough to have your content go viral in the beginning).
So what I mean is that nowadays to be successful as an Influencer what matters the most is how engaged your audience is. So buying bots, likes, follow/unfollow, or trying in any way to speed up the process won’t help you in the long-run.
Your biggest mistake as an Influencer in 2019 is to think of numbers as opposed to engagement. Don’t focus on how fast your followers increase, but focus on the quality of comments they leave you and how they interact with YOU.
I actually have a few hacks and tricks under my sleeve that I used to increase my engagement. These are some unconventional hacks that finally allowed me to start getting the number of likes I believed I deserved haha.
If you want to know some valuable hacks on having a super engaged audience, I strongly advise you to read my how I went from 0 to 5K FAST with an engaged audience. I share some extremely valuable tips there on my own strategies to going to 5k followers in 3 months with only about 60 posts.
MISTAKE 1) YOU ARE NOT USING YOUR HASHTAGS (PROPERLY)
Maybe you are using hashtags. If you are, good for you!! That’s already a great start!
I know many people who feel self-conscious about using hashtags, so if you already took the first step to post them on your pics, you are already on the right track. Give yourself a pat on the back, my friend. Hashtags really are the best way to be found organically online.
However, be advised that just using hashtags is NOT enough. Please refrain from using hashtags that are too generic, such as #love or #nature. There are literally thousands of people around the world using these as well EVERY DAY! The chances of you being found within that sea of pictures is VERY SMALL.
Hashtags are actually so complex that I could do a whole hollywood movie only talking about the theme. I am currently working on publishing a post on how to find and use the best hashtags on your niche (coming soon, guy!)
So in the hopes of keeping my blog posts organized, I advise you to read my other post on ‘’how to find and use the best hashtags to your niche’’.
Action item: Read my hashtags posts and do your hashtag research!!
Mistake 2) YOU ARE USING LOW QUALITY PHOTOS
This is a given, and I am sure you’ve heard this before. Posting low quality pictures is BRAND SUICIDE.
You should always aim to post your best, top quality photo. This means that if you don’t have something good to post one day, then simply don’t post at all. Quality trumps quantity, always!
Mistake 3) YOU NEVER POST
The single best way to get followers is to keep posting consistently. Being consistent does not mean posting every day (even though if you do post every day, you will of course grow FASTER.
However, please remember the prior item. If you don’t have a lot of high quality images, it is better to find a routine that works for you, even if that means posting 3x in a week
The best way to be consistent is to planning advance! Not only this will help your overall feed visual, but it will save you precious time during the week when you want to post.
Recommendation: I strongly advise using a tool called Later. This app allows you to plan your feed, move the pictures around, add a caption, research hashtags (even though I don’t recommend the ones in the app).
Basically it allows you to plan your entire post in advance. When the day comes for you to post, you simply copy and paste, and there you have your post (now don’t forget to engage during that first hour at least)
Mistake 4) YOU’RE NOT PUTTING EFFORT INTO YOUR CAPTIONS
One of the best ways to increase your following: Make people feel part of your story. Make want to people want to interact with you. I’ve talked all about how fundamental captions were for my account growth on my post on how I went from 0 to 5k in 3 months.
I also created an amazing freebie with tons of ideas to write your caption. These are the same templates as I use myself and I am positive that if you do it right, this will boost your engagement on your comment sections.[mailerlite_form form_id=6]
Mistake 5) YOU DON’T HAVE A CALL TO ACTION
A CTA (or call to action) is fundamental.
It is funny, but once you work online for a while, you will immediately see that people need to be told what to do in order for them to do it.
Many times people love a video on YouTube, but won’t give it a like simply because they don’t even consider it. That is why all YouTubers will remind people at the end of a video to like and subscribe.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve given someone a like just because they reminded me about it.
However, on Instagram CTAs are different. If someone is reading your caption, chances are they already gave you a like to that picture, so there is no point in saying ‘’if you like this picture, give me a like’’
Your Instagram CTAs for your captions should be something that stimulates someone to leave you a comment.
Pro Tip: Don’t over-complicate your CTAs. I’ve seen some people that ask questions that require so much thought, that I literally gave up on leaving that person a comment because it was taking too much effort for a simple comment.
(i.e., someone once posted a CTA that asked ‘’how do you deal when you have issues with lost luggage?’’ – man, who wants to reply to that? I honestly don’t have the time)
Ask something in the lines of ‘’what are you doing this Friday?’’ or ‘’do you prefer traveling to the mountains or relaxing at the beach?’’

Let me know that you’ve read this post and I will be sure to reply to a few of your pictures with heartfelt comments.
Mistake 6) YOU’RE NOT SPENDING ENOUGH TIME ON IT
What is spending time? You have to be strategic; it is not about posting once or twice, commenting two pics of your friends
Don’t be fooled that Instagram is working for you, It is super saturated, yet it is the number one platform to be on.
It is hard to say how much time you should spend on it. If you want to grow fast, then spend a 24h during a whole month just engaging and I am positive you will grow faster than the average Joe (of course, I am exaggerating).
If, like me, you still value your social life, try and find moments in your day where you can make better use of your time.
I, for example, like to engage when I am walking to and from work. I also engage when I am queuing for something or when I am at the pedicure.
Action item: whenever you have spare time, START ENGAGING! (this will save you tons of time when you have to post).
Mistake 7) YOU’RE NOT TAGGING ACCOUNTS TO YOUR POSTS
You can tag up to 20 accounts per post before publishing. Are you using a Zara coat? Tag Zara. Are you sitting inside a famous coffee shop. Tag that coffee shop. Tag, tag, tag until you reach your 20 limit.
Every account you tag increases your chances of exposure.
Mistake 8) YOU ARE NOT USING DMs
I started doing this only recently, but I am seeing great results in it.
Instead of commenting on people’s post, I decided to look what at my followers are posting to their stories.
Every time ANYTHING caught my attention, I would leave them a comment.
Something as simple as saying ‘’that looks delicious’’ when someone posts s picture of something they are eating, can take you far.
I personally feel more connected to my followers every time I do that, because it also makes them more real for me (as opposed as a numbers game).
Mistake #5) Not commenting back on people’s post
Did you know that if someone leaves you a comment, and you go to their profile and give them a comment, they are more likely to comment your picture again?
The law of reciprocity works really well on Instagram and you should never skip this out.
It does sound like a lot of work (replying to their comment AND leaving a new one to their picture, but just think of this as ‘’killing two birds with one stone’’. You will be engaging AND increasing your chances of getting a comment in the future).
BONUS TRICK TO GET MORE LIKES ON INSTAGRAM
Did you post to the Gram and got an unexpectedly LOW engagement? (I know the story. It really is painful)
You feel like deleting the post and sob in frustration after the embarrassment.
But don’t go pressing the delete button just yet!!
Just hold back from posting another day and instead, work on commenting and engaging more with others. You will ultimately get a better performing post, because these people will come back and like and comment your most recent post.
To sum up, NEVER do the following:
- NEVER buy followers – First and foremost: It is painfully obvious and makes you look like a total fraud. Secondly, it is one of the fastest ways to get shadowbanned. The Instagram Algorithm bots can tell that you bought fake followers simply by the fact that out of a sudden you account has a surge of followers (usually 1K+ in minutes).
- NEVER follow for follow – I’m always amazed at this one. It is such a common practice and the WORST thing for engagement because this is done purely to boom your following numbers. Unfortunately, these people have no intention of engaging with your content (the exact opposite of what you want). Stick to following people in your niche!!
- NEVER buy likes. Out of the blue, thousands of likes shoot in from a singular random IP address. Do this if you want the fastest way to get banned on Instagram. It is also equally important to keep in mind that both this, and buying followers, could hold legal ramifications if you are working with brands.
