2020 Christmas Bucket List
Find below all the fun 2020 Christmas bucket list activities.
1. Decorating Your House With Christmas Lights
Decorating your house with fairy lights is one of the jolliest things to do during Christmas and they make for a great reason to spend more time at home. Forget about lamps and ceiling lights. Watch Christmas movies surrounded by fairy lights and let the festive mood lift your spirits.
2. Read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas
This classic Christmas poem that should have a place in every Christmas lover’s home. You can get your own copy here.
3. Create Your Personal Santa Workshop
Why not spend an evening wrapping Christmas presents? Wrapping presents is one of my favorite holiday activities! I save all the gifts until just a few days before Xmas then spend the night listening to holiday music and covering them all in jolly paper to gift people I love.
Need help with holiday gift ideas? Go to my Gift Guide page and I bet you’’ be surprised with some of the ideas in there.
4. Bake Gingerbread Cookies
Yummy, nothing smells more like Christmas morning than homemade gingerbread men. Find a video below on how to make the perfect Gingerbread man.
2020 Christmas Idea: As we all have been spending more time at home than normal this year, why not build a Gingerbread house? Be sure to add a TV with Netflix and Gingerbread men wearing facemasks to give it a 2020 touch.
5. Make 3 Different Types of Cocoa
There’s nothing quite like sipping some hot cocoa on a cold Christmas month. It’s the perfect way to write your Christmas list and to take in the holiday mood. Add up to the holiday mood and use these festive mugs.
2020 Christmas Idea: Try creating new recipes for Christmas cocoa this year, why not? Even better: have a cocoa tasting fest at home and select the ultimate cocoa winner for Christmas day!
6. Zoom with friends and family over the world wearing Christmas hats
Organize a Secret Santa Gift Exchange
Secret Santa is a cheap way to guarantee everyone will have fun and get at least one present. I have a traditional one with my childhood friends every year (and we do it since we are 15 years old). The best part is playing guessing games with the people involved to guess who your Secret Santa is.
2020 Christmas Idea: Organize a virtual secret Santa. Apps such as Elfester can help allocate names to everyone. If you live in different countries (such as me and my childhood friends), you can always purchase items online and get them delivered to them on Christmas day (just ask them not to open the present until the Christmas zoom call)
7. Get Your Picture with Santa
Whether you have a child or are a child at heart (such as yours truly!), go to the local mall and get a cute snap of you with good ole Saint Nic.
Christmas 2020 Idea: This year it might be difficult to spot a Santa Claus for a photo opp (given the Covid danger). Why not turn this into a game then? Make it a personal goal to spot Santas around your city and see how many you can take a picture with.
8. Watch a Christmas Movie Under the Blanket
Slip into your comfiest PJs, girl (you know, that fuzzy onesie with the feet), make some popcorn (or find here healthy substitutes to unhealthy snacks), and watch a holiday movie that will get you into the spirit.
9. Even Better, Have a Christmas Movie Marathon
You can even go one step further and make it a movie marathon (is there anything better?).
I am personally a part of all 3 of the major TV Streaming services (Prime Video, Netflix, and Disney+, but I found that Prime Video has the BEST Christmas movie selection – see below).
Moreover, and best of all, Prime Video is included in Amazon Prime (so not only you benefit from their library selection but as well of having Prime’s 24h delivery service – perfect for Christmas. If you don’t have Amazon Prime, this is the best time to get it)
Best Christmas Movies to Watch Online
- The Santa Clause | Disney+ (top favorite Christmas movie since I am a kid)
- It’s a Wonderful Life | Prime Video
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas | Prime Video, Netflix
- Elf | Prime Video
- The Polar Express | Prime Video
- A Christmas Story
- Miracle on 34th Street | Prime Video (my second favorite. I remember watching this at the cinema with my mom when I was 5)
- Home Alone 1 & 2 (duh) | Prime Video & Disney+
PS – As a side note, I found the Netflix selection surprisingly uninteresting.
10. Watch the Nutcracker Ballet
The Nutcracker is by far one of those amazing Christmas ballets that everyone must watch once in their lifetime. If you’ve been to a live ballet performance of this masterpiece, you know what I mean.
2020 Christmas Idea: This year, however, theatres all over the world are closed and the usual annual Christmas ballets and orchestras will probably (and unfortunately) be postponed. Nevertheless, you can watch this amazing ballet version on Disney+ and Netflix is said to launch ‘Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker’ in late November.

11. Send Out Personalized Christmas Cards to Family Members
Every year we go to the store and buy a bunch of different Christmas cards to send out to people we love.
2020 Christmas Idea: Since we all have more time at home, and considering many stores are actually closed, why not be inventive this year? By gathering a collection of papers, ribbons, glitter, glue, and some decorative pieces you can create some pretty festive Christmas cards that will WOW your family and friends.
Collages and crafts are a great way to pass time and get creative. Plus it is therapeutic and fun for the whole family!
12. Make a Christmas Tune Playlist
Christmas music has come a long way over the years—it seems like every major artist has a song or album. Check out this amazing Christmas playlist on Itunes (I bet you won’t find a better Christmas playlist than this one).
13. Hide or Find the Elf on a Shelf
If you have children (or even want to play along with your housemate), this is a fun game to play for everyone (it’s one of those activities for all ages)!
How it works: At the beginning of the holiday season, this cute elf is placed all around the home acting as Santa’s eyes and ears, making sure all the children are behaving. Each night after the children have gone to bed he goes back to the North Pole to report to Santa. He returns to the home in the morning, but always to a different location.
Make sure to get yours well in advance! You can order Elf on a Shelf here.
14. Send Out Personalized eCards to People Who Wouldn’t Expect it
This year we had a chance to reflect on what really matters and reconnect even with people we haven’t talked to in years.
2020 Christmas Idea: Let’s keep this newfound human connection on-going for the years to come. Why not send some old friends and distant family members a personalized ecard and surprise them? Remind them how special they are n your life, even if you don’t see them often ad that you thought a lot about them this year.
15. Buy and Decorate a Christmas tree
To me, it’s never too early to start decorating your Christmas tree. Something about it gives the house a whole new vibe. Plus, is there anything better than leaving a Christmas tree turned on during the night, simply sparking joy around the house?
2020 Christmas Idea: Try a non-tree tree. Think outside the tree by creating a tree shape out of items you already have, or, arrange holiday photos and cards in a tree shape on a blank wall ( I did this when I lived i a dorm in college, lol).
16. Make Christmas Ornaments
Put your Santa thinking hat for this Christmas bucket list idea and make your own holiday ornaments for your tree (or for someone else’s).
2020 Christmas Idea: Make Paper Snowflakes
Many of us can’t travel to snowy locations this year and won’t be able to enjoy a white Christmas as most of us enjoy. Try making paper snowflakes instead. This is one of those activities for the whole family.
You can make some to hang on the tree, decorate presents with others, and even stick a few on the windows of your home for the neighbors to see. If you’ve never made one before, here’s an easy Snowflake How-to.
Having a hard time thinking of songs? Esquire has made it easy with the 30 Best Christmas Songs of All Time.
17. Go on a Starbucks Date and Get a Holiday Drink
As a blogger, Starbucks has become something of a Mother Ship to many of us (and some wait all year long for those amazing festive Starbucks drinks – and Christmas photo props, ahem).
Go to your local Starbucks and be sure to enjoy this year’s Christmas drink and give your opinion to others.
18. Wear Ugly Christmas Sweaters (and take pictures)
You may not be considered a diehard Christmas fanatic until you have sported an ugly Christmas sweater!
2020 Christmas Idea: There are plenty of places online to buy one, but it’d be so much more fun to make your own personalized sweater.
19. Alternative to Ugly Christmas Sweater
If you want to join the jolly mood, but you absolutely loathe ugly Christmas Sweaters, why not try funny Christmas socks instead? There are thousands to choose from and you can get into the mood while remaining classy. I love these and these.
20. Drink Eggnog on a Cold Day
Drinking eggnog is quite a tradition during the holiday season, so why not add it to your Christmas bucket list? Typically Eggnog is made with sugar, milk, cream, whipped eggs, spices, and a touch of alcohol.
Not a huge eggnog fan? How about just adding a little eggnog flavor to your coffee with this eggnog Torani syrup.
21. Wear a Santa Hat in Public
22. Open the blinds and take in the winter air
We’ve been inside way too long Time to open the windows and breathe a bit of the outside air
2020 Christmas Idea: just be sure you’re safely distant from others (go away, Covid)
23. Plan a Christmas Morning Themed Breakfast
Why not set a beautiful Christmas table, with decoration and food that will make you feel like your inside your very own Christmas wonderland. This year, more than ever is the time to invest in home decor, and no better day to feel happy at home than Christmas.
Find a selection of Christmas decor items in my Amazon Storefront here.
24. Be Thankful for 5 Things This Year
Take a moment to sit back and reflect on 5 things you are thankful for this year. During 2020 most of us had hard moments and a lot of uncertainty, but there are also many amazing things we can take away from this crazy year (spending more time with family at home, work flexibility, a more united world..)
What are 5 things you’re thankful for in 2020?
25. Do a Random Act of Kindness
Random acts of kindness are some of the most fulfilling and most humane and human things you could ever do (and the feeling is indescribable – especially when it is done for a complete stranger).
- Donate some food
- Go to an animal orphanage and help out for the day
- Pay the bridge toll for the person behind you
- Feed someone’s parking meter.
- Give a homeless person a blanket and pillow
- Donate to your preferred charity
26. Leave Cookies for Santa Claus
Last, but not least for your Christmas bucket list, on December 24th be sure to leave cookies for Santa Claus, even if you don’t believe in him anymore (You can enjoy them in the morning)!
2020 Christmas Idea: Why not bring the joy to some neighbors who might be missing loved ones who couldn’t make it for Christmas due to social distancing? Surprise them with a batch of fresh cookies.
