Trying to Achieve the Perfect Beachy Waves Hair

I know for a FACT that there are many girls out there like me: Lost souls who wish to style their hair and groom themselves better on a daily basis. But these good-intentioned girls don’t do more for their hair simply because they are totally clueless how to go on about it.
With that in mind, I came up with 8 valuable tips (for all hair types) that will help you model and conquer perfect and lasting waves!
Set aside your hair wand, the flat iron and the hairspray. Your dream beach hair is on the way!

8 Tricks to Achieving Perfect Beach Waves Hair That Last All Day
- Prep Your Hair With a Mousse
- Add Texture
- Bring the Beach to You
- Create Imperfect Curls
- Soften Your Hair Ends
- Use a Hair Iron
- Heatless, natural beach waves
Now let’s go over each of these tricks.
Trick 1) Prepare Your Hair with a Mousse
Preparing your hair before your start curling is paramount! This will ensure your curls last and stay in place, regardless if you have frizzy or straight hair.
Did you know tha hair mousse can give your hair twice (or even 3x) as much more volume? Hair mousse is a super versatile foam that you can use to give some hold and definition to strands, as well as protect and tame your hair and give unruly curls some control.
Mousse helps keep frizz in check and helps make your curls bouncier. And skipping this step is one of the big mistakes women do when trying to achieve the perfect, relaxed curl pattern look.
The best way to start is by applying a layer of mousse on the mid lengths strands. If you’re scared of having an oily appearance, avoid this by applying the hair mousse only to the tips, avoiding the root.
Comb it through so that the product spreads equally throughout your entire hair length.

Trick 2) Add Some Texture
Unfortunately, depending on your hair type, getting the perfect beach wave look might be more complicated and you might need some extra help from a texturizing spray.
Quality texture and volume sprays will be your best friends to make messy waves that give it a natural hair finishing touch. These seemingly magical hair sprays will help you make gorgeous textured waves (being especially important if you have naturally straight hair, like yours truly).
If you believe your waves won’t hold all night, follow by spraying a light fixing hair spray.
As you apply the spray, run your fingers through your dry hair to give it a relaxed, natural texture loose beach wave final feel. This also allows the product not to weigh on the strands.
If you’re afraid of ruining your curls in the process, remember this: When trying to achieve classic beach waves or any natural looking hair texture, the biggest mistake you can make is being afraid of making mistakes.
Nothing should be too perfect or symmetrical.
Don’t be afraid to try layering products either. My hair care routine often involves:
- Dry shampoo
- Dry texture spray
- Hairspray
- Pomade
- Hair oil
Tip: Heat Protectant
Don’t ruin your hair by being careless with it. Whenever you use curling tools, be sure to use them in low heat setting.
So next time you create waves using a curling wand or a flat iron to achieve beach waves, don’t forget to protect your hair! Heat protection is super, duper important and should never be overlooked.
I have been using this great heat protector to create gorgeous waves for years.
What I love about it is that it doesn’t leave my hair feeling heavy (and the smell, of course).
Alternative: Heatless Beach Waves
There are alternatives to heat styling your hair and still getting stunning, tousled waves.
To get waves with no heat or damage, start by prepping your wet hair with a volumizing mousse. Put a quarter-sized amount of product in your palms (a bit less if your hair is short). Use your fingertips to massage the product into the roots of your hair.
Let your hair air dry (avoid blow drying your hair with this overnight beach waves trick). After air drying, add a bit of texture spray to ensure you’ll get tighter wavds the moment you wake up.
Sea salt sprays like the BUMBLE & BUMBLE Surf Spray are a classic duo to get beach waves without heat
before going to bed, divide your hair into two braids and secure with a hair tie (we advise using silk hair ties to further avoid breaking your hair). For best results, finalize this step by blasting your hair with a blow dryer on low heat to activate the waves.
Trick 3) Bring the Beach to You
If you don’t go to the beach, bring the beach to you and create stunning, loose waves!
I am of course talking about sea salt spray, which plays an important role for the right texture of beach hair.
The most famous beachy wave hair texture spray (by far) is the Bumble and Bumble Salt Spray:
If you have very fine hair, a salt spray may be a great approach to try and can be especially handy.
How to apply sea salt spray correctly: For that post-sea hair effect, apply the spray to wet hair and then dry the strands lightly, so it looks like the hair has dried naturally after entering the sea.
If you feel that the strands are too dry, apply a little oil to give a shine.
Trick 4) Curling Iron: Avoid Uniform-Looking Waves
If you will use a curling iron (also known as a hair wand) to get beach waves, the trick to make it look like natural beach waves is to try not to curl your hair always in the same direction.
To achieve that natural, looser waves result, make sure that each strand has a different and non-uniform curl. Twist hair with flat iron in alternate directions, leave them messy and imperfect. Use texturizing product (cream or pomade) to create definition in the twists.
If your hair is already wavy, but you want to improve the natural strands, dry your hair naturally only with your fingers and make the curls into random sections of the hair.
For gorgeous waves, avoid starting at the scalp. Instead, start styling the hair a few inches down the hair shaft, depending on the length. For shorter hair, start a bit higher; for longer hair, a bit lower.
Once you’re done, curling your entire head, shake your own hair and gently scrunch hair oil to your hair ends, finishing it off with hairspray.
Trick 5) Soften Your Hair Ends
The secret to lasting waves is to let the hair cool down before combing it through.
This will ultimately give you’re a more natural and lasting look.
Leaving the tips smooth is also a good trick to achieve the perfect beach.

When making your curls with a wand or hair iron, be sure to leave the tips out, to give it a straight style.
Secondly, when releasing the locks of the hair, pull down to loosen the strands.

Finally, swipe your fingers along the entire length and make a mess of the wires.
If you feel you need more texture, it’s worth applying some dry shampoo!
Finalize by running a bit of hair oil to the ends of your hair to keep it hydrated and to guarantee extra hair shine.
For years I’ve been using this one which I am absolutely obsessed with.
Alternatively, this is a very popular (and cheaper) option or hair oil that I also recommend.
If you like DIY and natural products, then coconut oil will always be the winner on my list.
Trick 6) Use a Hair Ion (or a Hair Wand)
In addition to the hair wand, you can also create the waves with a flat iron.
The secret is to slide the board by length making the movement of “S” and keep alternating until you reach the end of the length.
I personally use this amazing 3-in-1 Paul Mitchell’s hair wand that I bought on Amazon and it has worked super well for me.
This to say, I myself am not a pro in using a flat iron to create beach waves hair.
With that in mind, I found this great video demonstrating the step by step to achieving beach waves hair with a flat iron.

Trick 7) Make The Hair Waves At Night and Go to Sleep
You’ll probably be surprised that the best wavy hair is the next day hair!
Do your curls and go to sleep. When you wake up the waves will be perfectly messy.
An easier alternative that doesn’t require hair tools is to wrap the damp hair in two low buns or braids and let it dry like this.
Let go in the morning and voilà!
Beach waves with minimal effort.
