About Winter Self-Care
Hi girls, how are you today?
Brrrrrr, it is cold outside.
I don’t know about you, but as a Brazilian I am a natural summer type of gal.
However, I’ve left my home country back in 2012 and since then I’ve lived in cold cities such as Park City (in the US) and Lausanne (in Switzerland).
Now I am based in Barcelona, where we are blessed with warmer weather. Nevertheless, we don’t escape that feeling of chill during colder months (I just turned on my heater, by the way… *feels great*).
Today we will go over my daily winter self-care routine to inspire you to take action.
At the end of the post, find as well self care ideas for winter days with further practice suggestions for you to choose which self-care activities suits best your own routine.
How to Care for Yourself In the Winter Season
The cold months can be a stressful time for many people. Shorter days, cold weather, and the never-ending packed schedules for both work and personal affairs.
More often than not, we tend to feel grumpy and with low energy during the winter season because of the cold weather. However, this does not mean that you should give in to the cold and allow it to take the life outta you.
Self-care is essential throughout the year, but it comes in handy during the winter.
What is better: when you have a lot of positive energy, you can transfer it to the people close to you, and lift their moods as well.
Self-care in winter months is all about reducing the stress of the season and committing time to yourself, even when all you wanna do is sleep and cuddle (well, this actually also counts as self-care in my agenda).
However, let’s take a step further.
These winter self-care ideas include not only personal hygiene and beauty routines, but also managing your schedule, taking time for exercising, eating healthy (as opposed to comfort food), and getting enough sleep.
My Daily Winter Self Care Routine
For the sake of the post, I will organize try winter wellness routine into morning time and nighttime.
Morning Self Care During Winter
Read below everything I do to remain happy and well when the weather is trying its best to make me miserable.
I hydrate myself more than usual in winter
The first thing I do when I wake up is to drink a lot of water.
We can easily get dehydrated during colder days because we tend to overlook our water intake, but rest assured your body needs just as much water as it does in summer.
Our skin gets dehydrated with the cold weather and this can also contribute to unwanted wrinkles and acne (yikes).
So be extra mindful and drink as much water as you can as soon as you wake up.
PS. When I went to China I was surprised to find out that Chinese people always drink warm water, even when it is mega hot. At first, this seemed weird, but there are numerous benefits to drinking warm water.
Warm water dilates blood vessels, which increases your blood circulation and helps with digestion, thus reducing constipation and aiding in weight loss.
So why not use the cold winter days as a starting point to start drinking warm water such as our Asian friends?
Morning winter beauty care routine
If you’re a regular in this blog, you know all about my obsession with skincare and beauty routines.
While I usually temporarily retire my ice globes whenever the days are too cold, on winter days I will always wash my face with warm water and a hydrating soap.
I continue with my normal routine (serums and all) and end up with a slightly heavier moisturizer than I would use in summer (yes, moisturize your face even if you have oily skin).
Don’t forget a deeply hydrating eye cream (I love the Kiehls avocado eye cream for winter, it’s amazing).
And for the love of God, don’t forget sunscreen, even during winter days with no sun!!! I love this sunscreen because it not only protects my skin from UVA and UVB rays, it also helps with skin hydration.
I’m sure to take my vitamins in winter
I aim to intake more vitamin D during winter to compensate for the lack of exposure to the sun. Vitamin D is important to help regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body (and these nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth, and muscles healthy).
Afternoon Winter Self Care Ideas
I go for a Walk in the Sun, even when it’s cold
Before the sun goes down, I aim to go for a walk outside.
Regardless if you take vitamin D, sun exposure is still necessary and helps us maintain a healthy mind.
I enjoy reading a Book from the coziness of my couch
As soon as I am done with work, the first thing I do is take a nice warm shower and cuddle down with a book on the couch. Even though I love reading year-round, there is really no better feeling than reading a book during cold days under a blanket, and this is probably my favorite winter self-care activity.
Get my book recommendations here.
Best Nighttime Self Care Ideas for Winter Days
Last, and never least, my nighttime winter skincare routine.
Drink your favorite tea before or after dinner. It is such a nice and mindful thing to do. Plus, not only it keeps us warm, but it also contributes to us being hydrated.
I enjoy going the extra mile and arranging a nice tea tray, with a lovely tea set and some biscuits. It really adds to the winter self-care vibe.
My beauty care is the same as always.
I remove my makeup with a double cleanse and apply my usual beauty products. However, during winter days I apply a last layer of a sleeping mask to help with my skin’s hydration during my sleep (I hate waking up with the feeling of dry skin).
This is especially important if you sleep with the heater on.
I love this Korean facemask brand for this purpose.
Stay Hydrated (again)
Once again, aim to drink plenty of (warm) water before going to bed. It’s always important never to forget to drink water, even when you’re not thirsty.
Other Self Care Ideas for Winter Days
Ok, now that we are done with my winter self-care routine, let’s go over some other self-care ideas for the cold days.
Enjoy Hot Baths
With the cold weather and increased sedentary time, it is possible for your body muscles to become tense.
If you have a bathtub, this is the best time to indulge in them. Another self-care tip is to use bath salts and bubbles to make the experience all the more enjoyable.
Go Work out
Don’t just sit in your office without doing any physical activity. Prioritizing workouts will help you deal with stress and other emotions that you would have suppressed.
Have Regular Eating Habits.
Ever wonder why some people add some pounds during the winter? Many of us will resort to comfort food during cold days because, well, it feels darn amazing.
During winter, eating a pizza is definitely more appealing than having a salad, but this does not mean you should completely neglect healthy eating habits.
Granted, ordering in a nice burger is always welcome (and part of self-care if it makes you happy) but be sure to not over-indulge.
A good way to keep healthy eating habits during winter is by meal prepping. This will remove the laziness of cooking and assure you continue with your regular vitamin intakes from healthier food too.
A hot cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate
Make yourself a hot drink and be mindful about drinking it. This means, take the moment to appreciate your hot beverage and the sensations of your body while you drink it.
Sort your winter clothes
If you’re like me and don’t have much storage space, (I usually have to switch my closet from winter to summer clothes and store them in a suitcase, depending on the season). This is a perfect time to declutter your wardrobe.
Go through the cold weather clothes to see what you love, what you wear regularly, and what you haven’t worn for the last 3 winters.
Decorate your home with seasonal colors & accessories
Go for colors and textures that reflect the season we’re in. It’s a feel-good sensation about being home.
Especially with the terrible pandemic we’ve been ongoing this past year, the best thing you can do is invest in your home decor.
Experiment cooking stews and soups
I am a fool for soups, so I always crave for colder days when it is once again acceptable to indulge in these.
Create some warm and hearty soups that you can batch cook and make big quantities of to freeze for super-busy times.
